PINK OASIS - Adaptive Reuse Project in Pasadena, CA
From commercial Bed, Bath, and Beyond to Pink Oasis, a Basketball and recreational facility in Pasadena, CA
For the third-year Integrative Studio, I designed a community sports center in Pasadena, California. The project was particularly challenging as it involved adaptive reuse, requiring me to retain and incorporate parts of an existing building’s structure while introducing innovative design elements. My design strategy centered around a radial organization featuring an open-air central plaza that directed the main circulation flows. This plaza effectively became the heart of the facility, enhancing both its functionality and community interaction.
To make the site more welcoming and to foster greater community engagement, I addressed several site-specific challenges. I transformed the area into an inviting environment through thoughtful landscaping and the strategic placement of communal areas, such as multifunctional roofs to encourage gatherings and social activities. Additionally, I incorporated environmentally friendly design solutions, such as solar panels and increased green spaces, improving the ecological footprint of the facility and user comfort and well-being.
These design decisions were reflective of my commitment to creating spaces that promote community engagement and environmental stewardship. Through this project, I learned to balance the preservation of existing structures with the need for modern functionality, ensuring that the facility could adapt over time to meet evolving community needs. This adaptive reuse project was a pivotal step in my architectural journey, showcasing my ability to integrate complex systems within a comprehensive and responsive design framework.
